Modern Foreign Languages

At Cove School we recognise the growing importance of language skills in the modern world and we aim to equip our pupils for the future by giving them a sound knowledge of modern foreign languages. Our goal is to increase our pupils' potential for success at work and in further study, and to expand their horizons through a deeper knowledge and understanding of other cultures.

The Modern Foreign Languages Department of Cove School offers a lively and stimulating environment in which pupils learn under the guidance of experienced and dedicated staff. Currently pupils entering the school in Year 7 study French, German and Spanish, covering a wide syllabus of topics and acquiring and developing skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing the language. Each language is studied for a term. Learning is further enhanced by the application of ICT in this area. In Year 8 there is the opportunity for those who have shown themselves to be able linguists, to continue to study 2 languages. This will allow a wider choice at GCSE.

For many years the Department has organised visits abroad so that pupils may gain a further insight into the culture of the country whose language they study and enjoy the first-hand experience of speaking and listening to native speakers. In Year 7 there is the opportunity to join the group trip to France, then in Years 8 and 9 the Department arranges a trip to either France, Germany or Spain for interested pupils.

A recent development has been the setting up of links for email and letter correspondence with two partner schools in France, one in Normandy and one in the Jura, through which we offer our students the opportunity to make contact with young French people of their own age and practise their language skills to their mutual advantage. In 2009 pupils had the opportunity to meet up with pupils from the school in the Jura.

GCSE Spanish students are currently corresponding regulary with students in Extremadura, Spain, via the eTwinning scheme.
